Oh Bearsy.....
This has been a rough week. Bearsy has been one of the toughest dogs we've ever had to deal with. After his pee frenzy, I put a belly band on him. I'm always reluctant to tell the owner if we're having a problem but it needed to be addressed. It's hard for owners to understand that their dogs can sometimes act differently at someone else's house. Plus I'm sure it's stressful for him because he's never stayed with anybody else and just moved from California, about a week prior to his Mom leaving.
I know he's an older man but this isn't incontinence; it's like he doesn't even care where he goes. His Mom suggests to letting him stay out longer so he has more time (we did). Take him out more often (we do). Use a leash on him in the house so we know where he is every moment (we did NOT). I'm sure she noticed our house is small; we know where he is, he's just very sneaky.
So if he's awake, he goes out every hour and-a-half and the belly band stays on 24-7. Still at least once a day he still sneaks in a pee. I have one band I bought that fit him and I had to make 2 more quickly out of an old t-shirt and then line them with a pad. I bet you now know a lot more about belly bands than you ever wanted. We always discuss if we want a dog back; majority rules. It was a hard no from all of us at this point.
Miraculously he came around. Night time bands were dry and most of Wednesday, so I took the band off. He was able to go 2-3 hours in between outings but we still watched him like a hawk. Then he became a fun dog, he was bonding with us all equally which is helpful. There were no more potty incidences after that. We still kept the band on overnight though because he slept on the couch and we couldn't monitor him, but he was still dry in the morning.
I'm so happy that this turned out to be a better ending to a sucky beginning, and we would be happy to have him back again.
